I always knew I would return to work after having my daughter, but like many new parents, I underestimated just how tiring it would be to work a full-time job and raise a kid. Between getting my daughter to school, running a household with my partner, and making it to work on time, my mind is constantly on the move just like I am. I have no regrets about my decision, but in the past three years, I’ve become much more intentional about my nightly routine, making it one of my top priorities.
My home is now full of sleep products I need to get a good night’s rest, such as the Dyson Purifier Cool, which helps remove allergens, a Coop Home Goods pillow that cradles my neck while I sleep, and an Amazon Kindle, which features adjustable lighting. Before I started a bedtime routine with these products, I would lay in bed for hours. Now, in a half-hour or less after my head hits the pillow, I’m sound asleep—and I don’t wake up until my daughter calls me from her bedroom in the morning.
Here are all the sleep products I use nightly as a busy working mom to ensure I sleep well and stay refreshed.
Coop Home Goods Eden Cool+ Crescent Adjustable Pillow
Amazon
My journey to finding a comfortable pillow with a long life span has been ongoing for years. I’ve struggled with pillows that deflate quickly, have uneven stuffing, or are too soft. This Coop Home Goods pillow might be expensive, but it stands out from other pillows I’ve tried. It features a crescent shape ideal for side sleepers like me because it cradles my neck and prevents cricks. The stuffing inside is adjustable, and the brand includes a little extra stuffing, so you can add or remove it until you achieve your ideal firmness. I appreciate that the pillow hasn’t collapsed in the middle since I started using it, which would render it useless.
Thausdas Dimmable Touch Lamp
Amazon
Part of what helps me relax at night is warm lighting in my bedroom (no overhead light—ever). I like this bedside touch lamp because it provides ambient, soothing light that helps me slip into nighttime mode as I change into my pajamas or watch a movie in bed. With one gentle tap of the button on the top of the lamp, the warm orange light switches on and off. It’s easy to use and compact enough to fit on a bedside table stacked with books.
Dyson Purifier Cool Gen1
Amazon
I have three cats, so although I vacuum obsessively, a thin sheen of cat hair constantly clings to my bedding, irritating my sinuses and watering my eyes. The Dyson Purifier Cool is an investment, but it cut my nighttime allergy attacks down to zero, resulting in less morning grogginess. It’s so quiet that the sound of it working doesn’t keep me up, and the filter doesn’t need to be replaced often—I’ve had it since June and still haven’t had to buy a new one. And it doesn’t just cleanse the air of cat hair but also dust and mold spores, elevating the overall air quality in my room.
Body Restore Shower Steamers
Amazon
You’re either a shower-in-the-morning person or a shower-in-the-evening person, and I am the latter (What can I say? I like to feel fresh and clean when I pull the covers over myself at night.) Shower steamers are one easy hack I’ve found to help me look forward to my nightly shower even more. The pod releases a tension-soothing botanical scent that makes showering feel less like a chore and more like a luxury. It’s a treat for the senses that makes that part of my bedtime routine feel like a trip to the spa.
Amazon Kindle
Amazon
I’ll be the first to admit that my phone is glued to my side during the day, whether I’m texting my partner or scrolling through photos of my daughter while she’s at school. Using your phone before bed can reduce the amount of REM sleep you get, which may cause your body to take longer to feel awake in the morning.
The key to staying off my phone before bed is my Amazon Kindle. The black-and-white screen is a welcome break from the sensory overload of a smartphone. With no internet or apps, my brain settles into the calming focus of a good book. As a bonus, it holds thousands of books and is light and slim enough that I can carry it pretty much anywhere, so whether I’m going on vacation or the subway, I always have something to read.
Levoit Smart Humidifier
Amazon
Given the aforementioned cats, I’m a big proponent of using a humidifier to make breathing easier—but it’s also a must-have in the dry winter months. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, which can help alleviate dry, itchy skin and stuffy noses. My daughter has her own humidifier in her room that we use during the cold season because waking up in the middle of the night with a runny nose and dry, itchy skin is simply not conducive to a good night’s sleep.
The Levoit Smart Humidifier runs for up to 60 hours and covers 505 square feet. It has a one-step top refill to prevent messy pouring. Download the compatible app to control a timer, night light, and more useful features.
Pure Encapsulations Magnesium Glycinate
Amazon
As someone who has had trouble sleeping since childhood, I’ve tried my fair share of melatonin supplements but have never had success. I decided to try a magnesium supplement instead, which I take before I head upstairs for my nightly routine. I feel noticeably sleepy, and it sends a wave of tension-relieving relaxation through my body.
Amy Fischer, MS, RD, CDN, recommends Pure Encapsulations Magnesium Glycinate if you have trouble falling asleep. “I recommend looking at magnesium glycinate—it’s magnesium combined with the amino acid glycine, and both may be able to help promote better sleep and relaxation,” she says, adding you can take it about 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.
